Blog Post 6: English Language Challenges

It's amazing how time goes so fast, I'm finishing this level of English and it passed very quickly.

I think it's a little difficult to say about my general experience learning English at the university, because due to the pandemic I did the first level completely online, and this semester we had a few face-to-face English classes, but then we returned to the online modality. Definitively, the online experience is more difficult than learning the language in face to face, when having online classes it is more difficult to concentrate because of the distractions of the house or the bad connection. In contrast, from the experience with the face-to-face classes this year, I feel that I learned much more than last year, I also feel more involved with the course, and I had a lot of fun.

With respect to the use of blogs, I consider it an innovative strategy to evaluate knowledge, since it differs from the typical classroom test with paper and pencil answering questions. I also found it very interesting that for each blog there are different topics in which we can express different ideas, preferences, and perceptions.

Despite the good experience of this year, I consider that I still have a lot to learn about the language. Especially what I find most difficult is to speak in English, since I usually feel insecure not knowing the translation of all the words that I would like to express, and consequently I get blocked and end up avoiding speaking in the language. To get better I think it is very important to keep practicing, maybe a good idea would be to practice with someone I trust so I don't feel insecure. However, I still don't have any concrete plans on how to continue improving my communication in English.

Finally, I have to admit that in general I don't use English outside of class. This is because the people I usually interact with do not speak the language well to use it constantly. I also don't usually watch movies or listen to music in English, because I feel that I don't enjoy watching movies in English, and with respect to music, my preferences are really more in Spanish music.

  3. The difference between face-to-face and online classes was quite noticeable :( I hope we can have the next face-to-face English course.

How Can Your Major Make the World a Better

I am studying anthropology, I think one of the reasons why I chose this career is because since I discovered its existence I thought it was the way in which I could make a contribution to society. I consider that motivation and vocation are the most important things to be able to make a contribution with the work I will do in the future, and I hope that anthropology will allow me to do so. I believe that anthropology in essence allows us to expand our way of seeing the world, allows us to put ourselves in the place of the other, and indeed to be more empathetic with others. It is from empathy, I believe, that changes can be initiated; it is vital to understand the ways in which others live in order to be able to help them effectively. In the case of archaeology, I really like the idea of being able to reconstruct the past, and give voice to many events, people, groups that have been ignored until now. In short, anthropology provides multiple tools to understand others in a resp...

My favorite piece of technology

In definitive the laptop is my favorite piece of technology.   I remember when I was I child I spend a lot of time in front of the computer in my house, I liked playing games, watched music videos and pictures about the universe. But when my family was able to buy a laptop for the home, my enthusiasm for this piece of technology only grew, because I found it fascinating that now I could do the same as on a computer, and that it would be easier to take it with me. Due to the pandemic, I generally use the laptop at home, specifically at a desk. However, before the pandemic when I had to go out for long periods of time, I always made sure to take my laptop with me so that I had everything I needed. I currently use the laptop mainly to connect to online classes, because the pandemic has made it impossible to have face-to-face classes. Besides this, the laptop is important for my day to day, since I use it to organize all my responsibilities, I can be attentive to the mail, w...

A Photo and its Story

This photo is from October 15, 2018 day in which I adopted my kitten. The arrival of my cat was like a great coincidence, because 1 days before with my family we had been talking about the possibility of rescuing an animal to live with us, and after analyzing it and realizing that if we can take good care of an animal, we decided to do it calmly. Coincidentally, a friend's mom called us saying that she had found a kitten dumped at the market, and that she needed to give them up for adoption urgently because they were in very bad health. So, I went out quickly with my cousin and when we arrived luckily, we still found two kittens, unfortunately the others kitties had died. That's how I found my cat. A vet had told us that it was a female, so for the first three weeks my cat was called Quimera Natti Natasha, until we found out in a check up that it was a male and his name was changed to Teodoro Ozuna. This picture brings me very nice memories, it was definitely a very goo...
